Is a Relevant Keyword in the Domain Name Still Important? Exact Match (EMD) Partially Match (PMD) Domains

u/Harigeman
Back to SEO after a 5 year break. What are the major changes?
I used to do some newbie-level SEO for a webshop in school, but now I'd like to do some for myself and I guess much of what I've learned may by now be a bit outdated. What are the major changes? Also:
β€’ Is back link farming still a thing?
β€’ Is a relevant keyword in the domain name still important?
β€’ Has keyword stuffing texts become more nuanced?
β€’ How do (and which) social media platforms factor in? Etc. Etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Backlink farming is still a thing however what is considered a spammy link has somewhat broadened.
I no longer advise clients to consider keywords in their domain. There is still a benefit but it's way too small to compete with something that's easy to remember.
Keyword stuffing is a big no, but you do need keyword research more than ever. Some keywords just need to occur once in your text now to be able to rank.
Social media still isn't a huge factor. (yet)
Feel free to ask anything else.

Thanks! Can you elaborate on this bit?
"Keyword stuffing is a big no, but you do need keyword research more than ever. Some keywords just need to occur once in your text now to be able to rank."
Like, how would I define these necessary keywords?

It really depends on the project but basically you would rather use keywords that have the most search volume (and are rankable with your project) than use keywords that nobody searches for.
Another great strategy is to use your AdWords data to see what actually converts on your website and do some keyword research around those keywords.
I feel like I didn't totally answer your question so feel free to ask a more specific question.

β€’ Link farming is still a thing which can get you either ranked or in trouble.
β€’ Domain names: Yep, seems to be
No need to keyword stuff but you do need to write the h*ll out of topics
β€’ Find the right audience. Social can still be used to help with the behavioral factors
The think the name of the game is to follow the simple approach of being the best resource you can for a topic.

Thank you!

Holy shiit. Yeah quite a bit.. Read up on Algorithm changes on Moz.
Note that if you were pre Panda/ Penguin apocalypse it is a very different world. It is easy to make things worse now.

If you mean low quality link farms or Private Blog Network (PBN), nah that is near pointless to do. Anchor text over optimisation is a big way to waste time (no more than 2% for your target non brand target keyword)
β€’ Is a relevant keyword in the domain name still important?
No that stopped working overnight in 2012. It has near 0.09% correlation (eg practically nothing) but I do guess when you mix in URL links the anchor does have the word in it. But registering red-shoes.info and 301ing it to your primary domain just is a waste of time.
A while later they may have softened it but I haven't had a play or thought of that in ages.
β€’ Has keyword stuffing texts become more nuanced?
Yes. It is more things not strings. I like LSI and using great content writing.
β€’ How do (and which) social media platforms factor in? Etc. Etc.
Social is about 7% of total signal, more in the first 1-3 months. FB blocked access to their Application Programming Interface (API) so while FB links help with traffic, don't signal SEO. G+ still has more SEO impact than it deserves. Twitter is good for News Jacking and does have paid API to Google.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)
There are a lot of subtle changes. Some main things is just quality content and working much cleaner than we used to.
β€’ Bounce rate is a huge signal now also. "Long click" is important to understand.
β€’ General ideas is that it is easier to write amazing content and do really good quality sharing than the old auto methods.
β€’ Mobile is 60% of traffic and is in a separate index. If your site isn't responsive it will be smashed down.
β€’ Brand chatter or brand search I do not recall being a thing back then.
β€’ Local search is a whole thing now.
β€’ Negative SEO / Toxic links/ Disavow is rare but kind of important to understand

Didn't Google say Bounce Rate is NOT considered. However, Dwell time is. Sort of the same, but not.

Yeah fair.
Also the detailed definition of long click etc.
But my main thing is "holy shit if I was still doing pre panda SEO I would be way out of my depth".
